5 Things Masters Runners Get Wrong About Protein

You’ve been running for what feels like your whole life, you know what shoes work, which energy gels work best for you & your favourite route. But as you age, things can change. Recovery takes longer, muscles feel weaker and more volume or longer runs isn’t making things any better. The problem may not just be age but 5 protein assumptions that stopped being true after 40

1

1. "I eat enough protein" — grams aren't the trigger.

In 2023 the International Society of Sports Nutrition released a positional stand on something many had never heard of before. They stated that leucine-enriched essential amino acid formulas trigger muscle growth & repair better than intact protein. In fact, 1.5-3g of free form EAAs absorbed into the blood can stimulate this process as well ad 30g of whey protein. As we age, our demand for protein increases, and our ability to absorb and use it effectively decreases. Talk about a catch 22! So, while we’re always told “eat more protein”, this isn’t always the case.

2. Recovery drinks are built for lifters, not runners.

Runners seem to focus more on feeling & hydration than protein & recovery - which makes sense. However, running also places big demands not just on muscle and bone, but also on blood amino acid levels. Placing a bigger focus on recovery and essential amino acid replenishment helps in many ways. 1) it enables better protein turnover, resulting in better recovery and a stronger body. 2) muscle mass can be better preserved when enough essential amino acids are in the blood stream. 3) EAA supplementation can help reduce fatigue and the feelings of tiredness by reducing serotonin update during running.

3. After 45, the signal needs to be louder.

As mentioned earlier, as we age we become less sensitive to protein. It doesn’t stimulate the rebuilding & repair signal as well as it did when we were younger ( Muscle Protein Synthesis). It doesn’t matter if you’re eating whole food protein or drinking shakes, it is still the EAAs in these proteins that drive this process. Because free-form EAAs are in a form ready to be absorbed, we skip the breakdown and digestion process needed with complete proteins. A dose of Bare Aminos means EAAs hit the blood quicker and provide a better stimulus or louder signal to turn on the repair and rebuilding process. Bare Aminos doesn’t replace protein, it’s a tool used in conjunction with it.

4. Gels fuel the run. Nothing fuels the repair.

You’ve completed your run, fuelled correctly during and now, it’s time to relax? Not quite. At this point your body is crying out for Essential Amino Acids to facility recovery, the repair and rebuild of bone and muscle, and to effectively recycle older proteins. After 40, a protein-balanced meal probably won’t cut it. Bare Aminos fills the gap.

5. The fade at 15km isn't always fitness.

Blood level amino acid levels run down over a long effort. When your body needs them, it pulls them from muscle mass. Runners in our reviews describe taking a serving or two of Bare Aminos before long runs and "maintaining over the distance" — one is a 21km tempo review, another finished her first Comrades at 56. Taking Bare Aminos before running can help reduce fatique, improve endurance and facilitate recovery when you finish.
