5 Things Nobody Tells Women Who Still Train After 40

You haven't changed how you train or what you eat. What changed is how your muscle reads the protein you give it. Five things the research is clear on, in plain language, and what you can do about them this week.

The Same Protein Does Less For Your Muscle After 40

Every meal with protein in it sends a message to your muscle: rebuild. Somewhere in your forties, that message starts landing more quietly. The same chicken breast, the same yoghurt, the same shake produces a smaller muscle-building response than it did at thirty. Researchers call it anabolic resistance (Breen & Phillips, 2011). It is normal, it is well documented, and it is not a disease. It is a dial that has been turned down.

The important part is what it isn't: it isn't your muscle giving up. The machinery that builds muscle is intact. It simply needs a stronger, clearer signal to get going, and a standard meal often doesn't give it one.

Nobody tells you this because most nutrition advice is written for 25-year-olds, and for 25-year-olds it works. The daily protein number you were given still applies. It is just no longer enough on its own.

Takeaway: the amount of protein you eat hasn't become the problem. How clearly it signals has.
2

There's A Per-Meal Threshold, And Breakfast Usually Misses It

Muscle doesn't add up your protein over the day. It responds meal by meal. Below a certain amount at one sitting, very little happens. Above it, repair switches on. In younger adults that amount is roughly 0.24 g of protein per kg of bodyweight per meal. In older adults it is closer to 0.4 g/kg (Moore et al., 2015). For a 65 kg woman that is about 26 g of protein in one meal, not spread across the day.

Now look at breakfast. Toast, a rusk, a coffee, a small yoghurt: 8 to 12 g of protein if you're lucky. That meal doesn't clear the bar. Neither does a salad lunch. Most women who train are hitting the threshold once a day, at dinner, and coasting on nothing for the other two.

Morning training makes it worse, because the meal that follows the session is usually the smallest one of the day.

Takeaway: the total isn't the issue. Getting enough into one meal, especially the one after training, is.
3

Leucine Is The Trigger. About 2 g Of It.

Of the 20 amino acids in protein, nine are essential: your body can't make them and has to be handed them. Of those nine, one does the switching. Leucine is the amino acid that tells the muscle cell to start building. The other eight are the bricks. Leucine is the foreman.

The research on adults over 40 points to a leucine dose of roughly 2 to 3 g per feeding to reliably trigger the response, delivered with all of the other essentials so there is material to build with (Ferrando et al., 2023, ISSN position stand). A small breakfast carries well under 1 g. A 25 g whey shake carries about 2.5 g, but bundled inside protein that still has to be digested.

This is the part that makes the rest of the list actionable. You don't need to double your protein. You need each key meal, and the window after training, to carry enough leucine to flip the switch.

Takeaway: count leucine at the meals that matter, not just grams of protein across the day.
4

Recovery Is A Signal, Not A Rest Day

Here is the thing you feel: a hard session used to cost you a day. Now it costs two, sometimes three. You've probably filed that under age. It's mostly under-signalling.

Recovery isn't something that happens because you stopped. It happens because your muscle received a clear rebuild instruction and had the raw material to act on it. A rest day with the signal turned down is just a day off. When the repair message lands less often, the rebuild after a session takes longer, and you feel that as stiffness on Tuesday from a session on Sunday.

The window that matters most is the few hours around training. Muscle is most receptive then, and that is exactly when most women who train early eat the least. The fix is not more rest. It's getting the nine essential aminos, leucine included, into that window in a form your body can use fast.

Takeaway: soreness that lingers is a message about signal, not a verdict on your age.

The Shake Problem

The obvious answer is a protein shake after every session. Plenty of women try it and quietly stop, for three honest reasons.

Calories. A 25 g whey shake is 120 to 200 calories, more with milk. If you train four mornings a week, that is a meal's worth of energy you didn't plan for, on top of the breakfast you still want to eat.

Time. Whey is still protein. It has to be digested before the aminos reach your blood, typically one to three hours. The window after training is partly gone by then.

Digestion. Thick, dairy-heavy, and it sits. Many women simply don't want 300 ml of shake at 6:45 am.

The alternative the research supports is free-form essential amino acids: just the nine, already broken out, dissolved in water (Ferrando et al., 2023, ISSN position stand). No bundle to digest, so they're absorbed in about 15 minutes, at around 20 calories. They don't replace your meals. They make sure the signal lands when your meals can't.

Takeaway: you don't need more shake. You need the nine essentials, in minutes, without the calories.

A Game-Changer in My Training Routine

As someone over 60 and a complete exercise junkie, recovery and maintaining muscle strength are so important to me — and this really helps.

Since adding it to my regime, I’ve noticed faster recovery, less stiffness after heavy training sessions, and a more energised feeling in each session — whether it’s weights, HIIT, Pilates Barre, yoga, or a run.

I am 56 years old and doing Crossfit 5 days a week… I recover very fast after each workout and my muscles are not so sore as they were in the past. I also do not feel fatigued after my strenght training days.

As a 60 something triathlete I was pleasantly surprised by the extent of my recovery as well as waking up refreshed. Wish I had this when I was still doing full Ironmans.

The powder has a slightly bitter aftertaste, but it's not offensive, I was expecting this after reading other reviews. Im in my early 50's and had been suffering from muscle aches and sore joints (especially wrists and shoulders) having recently started weight lifting, the amino acids have really helped with these, I'm noticing a big difference.

I just turned 50, and for as long as I remember, I have been plagued by crazy muscle cramps after my weightlifting sessions… I decided to give this product a go because it's the only one I have seen including the 9 essential amino-acids… And then... I realised that I had virtually NO MUSCLE CRAMP after a heavy shoulder session… Only negative point: it's quite expensive.
